Active Range Clearance – Emerald Warrior 10

Matrix supported the Special Operations Command 2010 Operation Emerald Warrior live-fire aerial training exercises at Pelham Range in Anniston, Alabama.

Operation Emerald Warrior is part of the $11.2 billion Warfighter program to improve the operational readiness and effectiveness of U.S. soldiers. Matrix’s role was to facilitate the execution of U.S. Air Force live-fire training exercises by assisting in siting a location for placement of aerial gunnery targets, conducting a MEC clearance along the access route and target footprint, providing line of sight clearance to observation posts by tree removal around the perimeter of the target impact area, and transporting the hard targets from the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office (DRMO) at Anniston Army Depot to Pelham Range.

This work was successfully executed through very close coordination with the Air Force Special Operations Forces operating from Hurlburt Field AFB, Florida, National Guard at Pelham Range, DRMO at Anniston Army Depot and Visual Awareness Technologies and Consulting, Inc. Matrix transported fifteen 27-ton M578 Light Armored Recovery Vehicles (ARVs) from the Anniston Army Depot DRMO into a cleared footprint in the Large Impact Area at Pelham Range.

From a pilot and gunner’s perspective, the M578 Light Armored Recovery Vehicle has very similar features to a tank and serves as a robust hard target for air – ground fire training, specifically firing 105mm howitzers mounted on AC-130H Spectre gunships. Matrix is currently under contract to conduct additional MEC clearance and rotate additional ARVs into the target area once the current ARVs are expended.
