Loadline Decontamination – KS Army Ammunition Plant

Matrix is performing the explosives characterization of buildings in the 500, 700, and 900 Area load, assemble, and pack (LAP) production areas and the explosives decontamination and demolition of significantly contaminated buildings in the 900 Area LAP at Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons, Kansas.

Matrix will also sample and remove any impacted soil beneath demolished buildings in the 900 Area.

Matrix completed explosives surveys and characterization of over 150 buildings and collected over 6000 real-time samples to assess if buildings posed an explosive hazard. Matrix also performed environmental assessments of the significant buildings in preparation for building demolition, including sumps, asbestos containing materials, mercury switches and florescent lights, PCB fluids, and lead-based and PCB-based paints. Matrix prepared work plans, safety plans, preparation and approval of an Explosives Safety Submission by DDESB for decontamination and demolition of significant buildings in the 900 Area munitions production line. Unpainted significant buildings, piping and equipment were thermally treated using a custom made 10 million BTU hot air induction remotely operated thermal treatment unit. Prior to thermal treatment, all asbestos and combustible materials were removed and properly disposed in accordance with state and federal regulations. Matrix is currently in the process of removing paint in preparation for demolition. Once demolition is complete, Matrix will characterize soil under the building slabs and sumps and excavate soil exceeding corrective action criteria.
