MEC Remediation - Iron Mountain Road Addition
Matrix performed a preconstruction MEC clearance at the Iron Mountain Road Addition Site in Anniston, Alabama for the Alabama Department of Transportation.
The entire site was clear cut with
UXO construction support, followed by stump removal and clearance of root balls by UXO technicians with handheld instrumentation. The area was then geophysically mapped, targeted, and cleared of materials potentially presenting an explosive hazard (MPPEH) to the depth of detection.
Four MEC items were recovered and explosively demolished during intrusive operations – three grenades and one grenade fuze. A total of 836.5 pounds of cultural debris (non-MEC related metallic scrap) and 114 pounds of munitions debris were recovered, identified, inspected, segregated, certified as non-hazardous, demilitarized as necessary, and properly disposed of.
Matrix was responsible for the overall management, UXO escort and anomaly avoidance, intrusive investigation, and quality control. The MEC clearance was completed within 45 days of contract signing and demonstrates our successful performance of an expedited clearance in a critical roadway development corridor that allowed Alabama Department of Transportation to begin a vital grading and paving project.
