Edwards Air Force Base Joint Land Use Plan
Issues at Edwards AFB will likely include future urban growth pressures from surrounding communities as well as the protection of critical airspace.
Edwards Air Force Base (AFB) is located at the intersection of Kern, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles Counties. The communities of Lancaster, Palmdale and California City, as well as multiple small jurisdictions, are also interested stakeholders in this process.
The Department of Defense’s (DoD) objectives for the overall JLUS program are (1) to encourage cooperative land use planning between military installations and the surrounding communities so that future community land uses are compatible with the training and operational missions of the installation, and (2) to develop strategies for reducing the impact of and encroachments on the existing community and military activities.
This project provides an in-depth examination of the issues facing Edwards AFB and the surrounding communities. External stakeholder participation, including the use of an advisory and technical committee, was utilized throughout this process to identify issues and develop implementable solutions.
