North Nevada Corridor Redevelopment

Matrix completed design and construction documents for the redevelopment of North Nevada Avenue from Austin Bluffs Parkway to I-25 in Colorado Springs. This segment of North Nevada is over one mile of former state highway 85/87 and serves the recently designated North Nevada Redevelopment Area.
The project serves as a gateway to the City by transforming the once-rural roadway into a six-lane principal complete street urban arterial. The improvements included the addition of a landscaped curbed median, signalized intersections, and upgraded drainage system. One of the major components to the project is a 150 - foot pedestrian underpass, provides safe and convenient access between the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, and the retail center.
Along with the roadway and aesthetic improvements, many engineering challenges were overcome. Within the corridor there were more than a dozen different utilities that needed to be addressed by relocation or avoidance. Two critical utilities include a major underground electrical transmission line and a vital Qwest communication duct bank. Both utilities lie under the roadway and intersected with the pedestrian underpass. Both utilities required relocation, but due to their extreme importance, the timing of their relocation could not delay the schedule of the project. Matrix developed a design and construction sequence that allowed the building of the bridge without disturbing either utility through simultaneous and independent construction of the bridge and the relocation of the utilities, which kept the project on track.
