Washington Street Reconstruction

This major reconstruction project in Thornton, Colorado provides a six-lane street section with a landscaped median, bicycle lanes and a 10-foot sidewalk/trail.

Matrix was retained by the City of Thornton to provide professional engineering and design services for the reconstruction of Washington Street from 144th  Avenue to 150th Avenue. The project includes 4200 lineal feet of reconstruction of Washington Street to provide a six-lane street section with a raised, landscaped median, bicycle lanes, and a 10-foot sidewalk/trail.

The project also includes a significant realignment and improvement of 3000 lineal feet of Shay Ditch, which is tributary to Big Dry Creek.  A new 250 foot long pedestrian underpass and storm drainage conveyance structure is also included at the Washington Street crossing over Shay Ditch,

Significant utility coordination took place with Noble Energy to accommodate an oil supply pipeline relocation and with XCEL energy to avoid existing major 230kv transmission towers along the west side of the roadway.  Additional utility coordination included design of watermain facilities and identification and adjustment of impacted dry franchise utilities.  Matrix supported the City of Thornton with right-of-way and easement documentation for the acquisition of property to accommodate the Washington Street and Shay Ditch improvements. Construction of the improvements is slated for 2012.
