The Ecological Services team at Matrix led a design effort that provided a full redesign of the former Asbury & Tejon Park in southwest Denver, now known as La Lomita Park. The redesign created more playable space for park users and improved the functionality of the stormwater facility by utilizing tailored solutions such as innovative stormwater technology, an ADA-accessible trail, traditional and nature-inspired play features, and nature-based design solutions. These improvements augmented the function of the park space to capture water during rain events to protect the surrounding community during storms and improve the water quality of the urban waterway before it entered the South Platte River.
The emphasis on the design was to create a space that the residents felt connected to, while still providing much-needed stormwater management. By improving sightlines and lighting throughout the park, upgrading play spaces, and updating the stormwater detention with innovative design solutions, the project team helped create a public space that met multiple, and sometimes competing objectives, providing benefits not only for the surrounding community but for the betterment of the surrounding ecosystem.
