Matrix is proud to announce the grand opening of Westminster Station Nature Playground, a cutting-edge, sensory-filled learning and playscape in the heart of Westminster, Colorado. The event provided fun for all ages, including music, food trucks, ice-cream, and nature programs with the Denver Zoo and Dinosaur Ridge!

Matrix served as lead designer, landscape architect, and project manager for the City of Westminster and worked with neighborhood groups and specialists to create a challenging, ADA-accessible environment that supports physical, cognitive, and social development through play. Nature playgrounds and playscapes use trees, grass, rocks, and other organic elements to produce visual and tactile experiences that develop gross motor skills, engage the imagination, and encourage children to move beyond their comfort zones to create new games and narratives. Westminster Station Nature Playground includes a prominent fort on top of a raised area known as “goat hill” that is connected to the main park pavilion and to a series of tree houses via suspension bridges. Visitors can further enjoy a large sand pit with a hidden dinosaur for budding paleontologists, water features that integrate natural stones and concrete slides, and a stage for impromptu performances or organized cosplay.

The nature park was made possible by grants and donations from Great Outdoors Colorado, Adams County Government, and Westminster Legacy Foundation and implemented as part of the Westminster Station Park and Open Space Master Plan. Matrix’ longstanding involvement with the park project is further detailed here.

Matrix staff were honored to stand among project partners, city leaders, residents, and influencers at the grand opening ceremony on November 6, 2021. Over 1,000 people were estimated in attendance.
